If you ride the KTM 390 Adventure R off-road properly, sooner or later it’s going to have a lie down — and that’s where proper protection really matters. In this video I’m fitting and testing crash bars and a bash plate from Outback Motortek, a brand well known for putting their kit through real-world abuse — not just showroom testing. The crash bars are built from 25mm mild steel tubing and are fully frame-mounted, helping to spread impact forces away from the engine during drops and low-speed crashes. The bash plate is made from 4mm aluminium, supported by steel frame-mounted brackets, offering serious under-engine protection. It also features ventilation slots to help airflow and cooling, while protecting vulnerable components — including the gear shifter, which is often one of the first things to get damaged off-road. This setup isn’t about looks — it’s about confidence when riding trails, green lanes, and adventure routes where falling off is sometimes part of the experience. Today I’m taking the KTM 390 Adventure R green laning to see what it’s really made of. No filters, no hype — just real riding in real conditions. Mud, ruts, slippery climbs and mistakes included. Superbike Factory told me I could pick any bike from their showroom to take out and ride… and instead of choosing the newest or most expensive machine, I went straight back to something I already knew. This is a 2018 Honda Africa Twin DCT — a bike I owned brand new back in 2017, and one of the very few motorcycles I genuinely miss. This particular example has only 13,500 miles on it, is priced at £6,490, and reminds me why the original Africa Twin became so popular in the first place. It’s comfortable, capable, reliable, and — by modern standards — refreshingly simple. No radar. No overcomplicated electronics. Just a proven engine, Honda’s brilliant DCT gearbox, and a bike that does exactly what you ask of it. In a world where new bikes are getting heavier, more complex, and a lot more expensive, it made me wonder… have we actually been moving forward, or just adding more stuff?
